Fini Fani
Book design - Exhibition signage
Fini or Fani is a genaral term for fabric, cloth or tissu and the clothing that is made from, in Mali and surroundings. This publication presents three Mali-textile traditions: the Senufo mudder-fabrics, the Dogon-indigo cloths and the Bamako bazin (cotton damask). Cover art-work and editorial layout in close collaboration with the authors Anja Veirman, Patricia Gerimont & Isabel Brouillet.
In Mali, Fini or Fani is the general term for cloth, but the traditions behind it run much deeper. This project was a total immersion into the soul of Malinese textile, from the Senufo mud-fabrics and Dogon-indigo to the vibrant Bamako-Bazin.
Rather than simply showcasing the fabrics, I wanted the cover to reflect their tactile spirit. I hand-drew the motifs using charcoal and pencils, deconstructing and rearranging the elements into an entirely new composition, a tribute to Malinese craft through a contemporary lens.
The publication also hosts a beautiful modern exchange: three textile artists, Bram Van Breda, Oumar Dicko and Julie Menuge, contributed original works created in direct dialogue with these three traditions, bridging the gap between ancestral heritage and a new artistic vision.
